Music is a birthright.

When properly nurtured in children, music and dance bring about heightened states of awareness encouraging openness, sensitivity, careful listening, and collaboration. Adults benefit as well, regardless of their prior experience with music and dance. Live music and dance energizes and fills people with a sense of joy.

Not Music Class, but Music Culture

In 2004, I had the opportunity to create a 5 day a week music program in a newly established private K-8 school in Champaign, IL. With the director of the school's full support for a new music curriculum, I was able to build a program so embedded in the school's everyday culture that every child considered themselves a musician and dancer. With little money for fancy equipment, we focused on rhythmic immersion, music theory, and singing, using our bodies, a bucket of sticks, and a white board. Music-making was considered a vital part of the students' education.

Who is musical?

Our perspective on musicianship has limited our natural desire to explore music and movement. One of the building blocks of creating a musical life is shifting the vocabulary we use to describe it. Our vocabulary should strive to encourage and guide everyone in their growing musicianship, whether they are singing around a campfire, playing a toy drum by their mother's feet, or diligently practicing their violin. I have had the privilege of building a school music program which demonstrates that all people can develop their inner musician.

Workshops, School Visits, Presentations

I am passionate about music education! I love nothing more than to share my passion and knowledge with students and teachers alike. I regularly visit schools and give workshops in percussion, dance, and song. These dynamic sessions engage, delight, and inspire the students.

I also give workshops and training sessions for teachers. We focus on how to release the full musical potential in all students. My workshops are hands-on, music-making sessions that are fun, collaborative, intellectually challenging, and filled with material and strategies that you can take right back to your own classrooms.

Recent Workshops and Presentations include: Teacher training for the Appleton Area Public Schools music teachers.

A presentation at the Illinois Association for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance conference where my students showcased the amazing results of an immersive music program which integrates movement and dance.

Guest clinician at the 3 day Music Education retreat for the National Association for Music Education chapter at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music.

Consultant for Appleton Area School District general music curriculum redesign.
